Writing and Speaking - Knowledge Journaling and Taking it to a Higher Level

"Knowledge Journaling" is a phrase coined by Kip Gregory, and this is a concept he explains in his various seminars. One take off concept was the ability to record conversations and turn those into micro-blogging sound bites, audio presentations, YouTube Videos, etc.. Consider if you will all the times when you have explained something to someone while on the phone. Before retirement, I was a franchisor, and our franchisees used to call me nearly 24-seven. They would ask me questions, the same types of questions I'd answered hundreds of times before.

It would've saved a lot more time to have that information available in multimedia where a franchisee could go and review it. That makes sense right? Sure it does, but you wouldn't have to be a franchisor founder to make use of such a knowledge journaling technique. If the system were available, and could record your cell phone conversations for you, you might find it would be very easy to edit it, and collect that information, and then repurpose it, recycle it, and reuse it over and over again. Of course, if you didn't want to save it, you simply erase it.

It would be much like a digital recorder on all the time, and it would be good for parents, students, professors, mentors, consultants, and business owners. When you pass your knowledge onto someone else, it means they value it and need it. If they need it, chances are someone else needs it too, perhaps someone who might pay you for it, or you might use the information and post it on the Internet to get future clients, additional followers, or maybe you're into getting more friends on your Facebook page, Google+ page, or Twitter account.

In many regards this could take the best of all worlds and you could use it for a better purpose. You are taking the spoken word, and your actual knowledge as it flows out of your brain and to another party, along with speech recognition software, and using it to do good things, help others, and share information. Indeed I believe that was the entire purpose of the Internet when it first got started; to share information amongst the human race.

Actually when it first got started it was for researchers to share their knowledge, and that's what Knowledge journaling is all about, and why we need to take it to a higher level. If you are a writer or speaker, all this information could be invaluable to you and your future. Imagine all of the articles you could produce or the great speeches you could deliver with this material? Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. If you have additional ideas and strategies along this line of thought, please send me an e-mail.

Using Transitional Words and Phrases for Effective Writing

When conducting editing and proofreading for documents, many editors and proofreaders often note the lack of transitional words and phrases used by authors in their work.

Transitional words and phrases are key elements to creating the relationships between sentences in a paragraph. Specifically, these words and phrases identify spatial, chronological, and logical connections in writing.

Let's take a look at an example of a paragraph that fails to employ transitions. As you read through the paragraph, try and see if you can identify where transitions would be necessary to improve the flow.

The invasion of Grenada stood as a strong precedent for other countries and groups of Latin America. The invasion emphasized that toleration of communism was unacceptable. President Reagan sent a strong warning message to entities such as the leftist Sandinistas in Nicaragua that regime change by United States military intervention was very much feasible. The Reagan administration expressed the option to go beyond simply arming a proxy army like the Contras and actually invade Nicaragua outright. This precedent stood invaluable to the suppression of communism.

The above paragraph can be easily improved by utilizing transitional words and phrases to connect the paragraph's sentences. The paragraph below simply inserts these tools in the current text.

Lastly, the invasion of Grenada stood as a strong precedent for other countries and groups of Latin America. The invasion emphasized that toleration of communism was unacceptable. In this manner, President Reagan sent a strong warning message to entities such as the leftist Sandinistas in Nicaragua that regime change by United States military intervention was very much feasible. Specifically, the Reagan administration expressed the option to go beyond simply arming a proxy army like the Contras and actually invade Nicaragua outright. As a result, this precedent stood invaluable to the suppression of communism.

As one can observe (another transitional phase!), the transitional words and phrases create a better flow to the paragraph and ultimately develop a relationship between sentences. As a result, your writing will easily convey your content to your reader in a natural manner. Use these tools to increase the effectiveness of your own writing!

3 English Language Writing Tips to Improve Your Writing

Writing in the English language is pretty straightforward but very difficult to be good at. In order to improve your English writing, you have to put in lot of time to practice writing. Here are some useful tips that will help you improve your English writing.

Tip 1: Build on Your Vocabulary

Writing is a form of expression. And in order to express yourself better, you need to have the words to express what you are thinking or feeling. If you are limited by your vocabulary, your writing will never be able to communicate fully what you want to convey.

There are many ways you can improve on your vocabulary. You can study the works of other writers. You can listen to tapes or enrol in English classes. You can even sign up for online English lessons if you prefer the convenience. Some people like to learn from free resources on the Internet. As long as you are exposed to the English language on a daily basis, your vocabulary will improve.

Reading and listening can only do so much. To really improve your writing, you must put in the effort to practice. That means you must apply what you have learned. Knowing the words and actually using them are two different things. Your writing will improve when you have figured out how and when to use different words.

Tip 2: Putting Sentences Together

Sentence construction is the basic building block of all writing. First, you have your words. But words do not mean much until you are able to put them together into meaningful sentences. This is where some English writers run into problems.

Avoid run-on sentences that ramble on and on. Sentences that are too long tend to contain mistakes. When readers read your writing, their breath actually follows the rhythms of you writing. For instance, the reader will pause when there is a comma. If you use a period, the pause is a little longer. When you write very long sentences, your readers will find there is no time to catch their breath!

In addition, long sentences also tend to contain more grammatical mistakes. It is more difficult to check for correct tenses in a long sentence. The answer is to write in short, clear and concise sentences. A simple passage that contains messages that are easy to understand is much better than a long one with lots of errors and mistakes.

Tip 3: Be an Avid Reader

Reading and writing are closely tried together. You writing can not become better until you have seen how a good piece of writing looks like. And you will not be able to tell good writing from poor one until you have read numerous amount of good writing.

Reading is something that can be cultivated into a life long habit. Pick any subjects that you are interested in and start reading. It does not matter if you pick up a book, a magazine, or a newspaper. As long as you are reading and writing consistently, your writing will eventually improve.
